  1. Printer Troubleshooting Steps and Procedures

Important Note: These are the steps common for all brands of printers to troubleshoot printer’s problems.

  1. Reseat both ends of the cable if your printer and computer are connected by a USB cable.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Turn the printer off.
  4. From the A/C outlet or surge protector, unplug the power supply to the printer’s power cord and wait at least for 30 seconds.
  5. Now plug the printer power cord back into the A/C outlet or surge protector and turn the printer back on.
  6. Try to print a test page.

Windows 10

  1. Type Devices and Printers in the Search box on the taskbar.
  2. In Control panel, touch or click Devices and Printers.
  3. Right-click or touch and hold your printer.
  4. Click or touch Printer Properties.
  5. Make sure that you choose Printer Properties and not Properties otherwise; you will not find a Print Test Page button.
  6. Touch or click Print Test Page under the General tab.

Windows 8(8.1)

  1. By pressing the Windows key on your keyboard from the Desktop, or clicking on the lower left corner of the screen, navigate to the start page.
  2. Type the word “printer” on the start page, a search is automatically performed.
  3. Now click on Settings.
  4. Choose View Devices and Printers from the search results.
  5. Right click on printer icon, and then choose Printer Properties.
  6. On the lower right of the dialogue, click the Print Test Page button.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Windows Start Button and select Control Panel from the list of programs.

Windows Vista

  1. Click on the Windows Start Button and select Control Panel from the list of programs.
  2. Double-click Printer, then right-click the printer and click on the option Properties.
  3. Now click on the function Print Test Page.
  4. Once the test page is printed, click on the Close button.

Windows XP

  1. Click on the Windows Start Button and choose Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Printers and Faxes, then right-click the printer, and then choose Properties.
  3. Now click on the function Print Test Page.
  4. Once the test page is printed, click on the OK button.

No further action is required if your printer prints the Test Page successfully.

  1. Verify that the printer from which you are giving print command is set as the default printer.
  2. Press and hold the Windows + R key.
  3. Type shell:PrintersFolder in the Run box and then touch or click OK.
  4. To highlight the desired printer, touch or click on it.
  5. Right-click or touch and hold the desired printer.
  6. Click or touch the option Set as default printer.

Important Note: If you don’t see the option Set as default printer, it normally means that your printer is already set as the default and usually you will see a check mark next to it.

  1. For networked printers (connected by a wireless or wired network, but not by a USB cable), make sure that your printer’s portal settings and IP address are correct while it is on the network.
  2. To diagnose and automatically fix any printer spooler issues, run the Printer troubleshooter.
  3. Print a test page.

(For instructions on how to print a test page from Windows, follow the steps given in the step 6.) No further action is required if your printer prints the Test Page successfully.

  1. When the printer was working, perform a System Restore.

If the printer still does not work successfully, head to the next step.
